When Lovebugs Attack

The "White House"...  in Chattahoochee, Florida.

5:31:40 PM

We've had lovebugs swarming around our house for several days now. Lovebugs, lovebugs everywhere you go. For those of you lucky enough to live in areas where lovebugs are unheard of - lovebugs are the most pesky insects you can think of.

Their name is a serious euphemism. These bugs fly around in pairs with their behinds attached to each other. I guess it's mating season. I rarely see a "single" lovebug.

No wonder they are a bit disoriented, considering they have two brains, two pairs of eyes, and two sets of wings (maybe more I haven't ever studied them up close). They don't sting so two or three around isn't so bad. But when a whole swarm of lovebugs descends upon you... yikes.  You can swat at them and the next thing, they fly into your face or  your eye or such.  The pictures below were taken under extreme circumstances, with me trying to hold the camera still while dozens of lovebugs attached to my arms, hands, legs, and everywhere else on my body.

 lovebugs-attack.jpg

Oh well at least they're seasonal and lovebug season is over soon.

lovebugs-large.jpg

P.S.: The pictures are the first I've posted of my car since the new paint job for my Dodge Neon that had serious problems with peeling paint. Looks good doesn't it? At least the lovebugs seem to think so...

I live on the Alabama river in central Alabama and the love bugs have been here since the first hurricane hit so they say that the love bugs swarm for 4 to 5 weeks. I guess we just have to endure the tiny pests.

what to do?

Try them with sugar and milk, and they're not too bad!

Can't go out white back door
Posted 9/14/2006 6:49:17 PM by El

I am in the Pensacola area and lovebugs are driving me crazy. You've never seen anything like this. I have a hot tub and wonder if that is drawing them. My back door is white, is that it? I lite candles and put them on the steps....seems to help somewhat.

There has got to be something!
Posted 9/17/2006 10:28:07 AM by Kelly

Yes, they are very aggravating. Our deck is covered. Is there a spray?

They're back!

We live in south Louisiana and have been infested with those lousy lovebugs approximately two weeks now. Just hope we can outlast them again! People tell us they will only be here until the first cold snap, but down here that may take quite awhile.

my house is salmon and white, my neighbors is blue and white and all of the lovebugs are on my porch. My neighbor may have 2, whereas I have 102. What can I do to get rid of them?

Posted 9/21/2006 4:43:51 PM by Phyllis in Okeechobee, FL

A tip for getting them off your car before it ruins your paint. A "good ole boy" here in Okeechobee told us this trick.

Wet your car/windshield or where ever they have hit and wipe them off with a Bounce dryer sheet (or any brand). They wipe right up and then just rinse the white film off of your car. It works.

they seem to be attracted to white
Posted 9/23/2006 11:41:36 PM by Brenda

The last 2 days me & my husband have been working outside of our house. I noticed that they swarm to anything white, walls, lawn chairs, and me. I was wearing light colored clothes & my husband was wearing dark colors. They were all over me & hardly bothering him.

I'm racking my brain
Posted 9/24/2006 4:22:58 PM by Sissie

The hose works for the time but unless your willing to empty your well or pay hundreds in a water bill forget it. That person upset about 102 try my place there are thousands all over my house and that's not counting the hundreds I vac out of my house every week. I'm working on a natural spray to get their sex under control around my neck of the woods any way. As soon as I find it I will post the answer for all to see.

Everytime I go outside they attack me get on my clothes on my sandles, in my hair~~ I heard the dryer sheets really work too. Today I took insect repellant spray outside and sprayed the doors..we'll see in the morning if it works. Its just an idea....I think I am going to work on a repellant too~~~ Its just unbelievable. My husbands car is beige and mine is red....hundreds on the cars. uggh~~~ They say they only last 3 weeks. Its 3 weeks too long for me.
If anyone has a solution, please post. Thanks~

love bugs in south alabama
Posted 9/27/2006 10:47:07 PM by shekia

After hurricane season in 2005, they first appeared in a very heavy form. These bugs are very irritating and stupid, they don't move when you chance, spray or whatever. This year, they are even worst, I washed them down with water and kill them instantly; however, I might be paranoid but I can swear I been bite a couple of times. Do these bugs bite, when are they going to stop coming and when did they actually come from the islands

Love Bugs do BITES!!!
Posted 9/28/2006 8:23:50 PM by The Innocent One

When I go outside wearing my blue jean and dark t-shirt to cut my grass they swarmed all over me so I went back inside...I get a big nasty bump that look like a big water bump one on my face and my arm they re really itching...so again I waited a week I did the grass and wearing dark blue joggin pant and short sleeve tshirt (white)..surely enough I get bit by a lovebug or two and came back inside my arm were swollen so I know I'm not allergic of anything but lovebugs OHHH I HATE IT!!

How to get rid of love bugs
Posted 11/22/2006 2:33:24 PM by Candice

Love bugs (Plecia nearctica) to get rid of them in the house--vacuum them. Outside, encourge the birds that eat them--- American robins and bobwhite quail eat them. Earwigs, centipedes, two species of beetles eat the larvae. Decrease pastures and grassy habitates, drainage or swampy areas where the lovebugs lay their eggs beneath decaying vegetation. They like nectar from sweet clover, goldenrod (this is not ragweed, that is a totally different plant), and brazilian pepper plants. A fungi, Beauveria bassiana showned some affect on the larval mortality when eaten by lovebug larvae. The larvae also eat at the base of plant roots of diseased plants. If you have aphids on your plants, they excrete honeydew which lovebugs eat. Ants like honeydew too and will fight to protect the aphids so they can get the honeydew. To get rid of aphids, order ladybugs from Gardens Alive. Lady bugs eat aphids. Or use Safer insecticidal soap. Perhaps Deltamethrin might help. (Do NOT use this products on fruits or vegetables or any food plant. Do NOT spray when the wind is more than 5mph.) Another suggestion for a quick knockdown is Permethrin SFR. Or in the house use a hand held zapper. The outdoor zappers kill over 75% of the good bugs. If you have a swampy area on your land, try to plant pitcher plants. Lovebugs drown in these plants by the zillions. (these plants actually eat them!) These plants grow best in acid soil, full sun and very moist boggy ground. Hope this helps.

Love In The Air
Posted 5/20/2007 9:37:18 AM by Tee

As I look at all these bug it came to me two different ways (it made me laugh).
1. It made me think about the Bible days when it talked about the plagues (it destroyed crops in the Bible and maybe some people die due to being so afraid of them well look at lovebugs they destroy the paint on your car and it makes your car look ugly in the front and windshield.
2. It makes me think how we should be with others (especially to your children, parents, spouse, sibilings, etc.)these lovebugs will stick together no matter what danger it comes in contact. I feel that they may have laid many eggs for them to come back the next year in full force (plus that is alot of love making in the air hummm!)Either WE need to be more loving or WE have a lot of loving to give but don't let it come ONLY ONCE A YEAR. GIVE ALOT OF LOVING SO IT WILL MULTIPLE YEAR ROUND.

were they man made?

Lovebugs and new paint
Posted 5/30/2007 8:25:08 AM by eddy

Lovebugs are very much attracted to something in the paint on newly painted homes. I had the misfortune of having my house painted the same week that the lovebugs started and my house and porch are constantly covered with lovebugs. My neighbors who have not recently painted their house seem to have very few lovebugs. Does anyone know of a repellant that can be sprayed on the house?

The government should be made made to get rid of rotten bugs.

You can bet that if they were in another country the US would be there.

But what the hell we only pay taxes

Love Bug Superstition?
Posted 9/22/2007 1:07:36 PM by Benji

Has anyone that's had anoverwhelming swarm of love bugs attack their home link with some other major happening in their life. For example, I was diagnosed with Colitis which I can not get rid of and now we have these love bugs that I can not get rid of. It sounds goofy but I'm thinking these things must be passing on some kind of supernatural sign.

Lovebugs by the hundreds
Posted 9/22/2007 4:45:48 PM by A.

I heard that these lovebugs are around for about two weeks>>>>> somebody lied... I have a white car (its covered with lovebugs). Both my house and my business are painted brown with white on the windows and doors (also covered with bugs. I just spent a couple of hours in the yard trying to find something that will help my poor customers as they fight there way from their cars, while waiving their arms around like crazy and trying to cover their mouth and eyes at the same time, just to reach the door. I feel so bad for them. I have sprayed two cans of bug spray on the walls, sprayed the house and store walls with water, they turned and attacked me (time to run....) I put ammonia in a spray bottle and sprayed the outside walls, thought that the smell might get them. (I'm here to say, that does not work. Now, I've plugged in the electric bug zapper...(a little help, but not enough.
PLEASE SOMEBODY, HELP ME. I'm in the Mobile Al. area. (LOVEBUGS FOR FREE!!! WILL BOX UP, JAR UP, BAG UP, for the kind person who has a love for the dreaded lovebugs ....HELP ME, HELP ME, even the leaf blower doesn't help..

New Paint Job
Posted 9/23/2007 3:17:12 PM by Brenda

We recently painted our house and the love bugs are taking over. They are millions of them outside and hundreds of them inside. They are coming in through the baseboards, doors, windows and even the light fixtures. I've never seen anything like it in my life. I spent everyday last week, sweeping, vacumming, and taping up my doors and windows and they're still coming in. They are swarming so bad around my house that you can't even walk outside. My son went over to stay with his sister because he can't stand it. Is there anything that can be done about these annoying bugs? I feel as though I'm being held hostage in my own house, like something out of a horror movie.

PEOPLE! Get Real!
Posted 9/23/2007 4:15:53 PM by jethro

First- Love Bugs DO NOT BITE! Second- They only last about 4 or 5 weeks. Third- All you people who are wondering why they are around only your house, guess what, they're not only around your house and if they are, check the plants around your house they're probably attracted to some of the plants there. Fourth- THEY DON"T BITE!! Come on people don't you have more important things to worry about besides a little black bug thats flying around your house or stuck to your windshield? If your so concerned about your paint, wash your car. Oh and by the way, THEY DON'T Bite!!!

Posted 9/24/2007 9:15:20 PM by Benji

I spread some Ortho Max Insect granuals over all the wet spots around my home and the love bugs seem to be decreasing by over 1/2 each day. Saturday I had easy 1-million bugs. Today is Monday and I'm down to a few thousand. I am sweeping dead bugs by the dust pan full. My hopes are the larvae fed off of the granuals and they died. Larvae live & grow in moist areas of the dirt.

If anyone trys this please keep us posted on how or if it works.

Sick and Tired of Love Bugs
Posted 9/26/2007 9:31:14 AM by Kissimmee

Strange enough as this may sound, I want you to know that Scrubble Bubbles kills the Lovebugs. This morning I was outside trying to clean the residue that the lovebugs left on my window seal. I got a can of Scrubble Bubbles and sprayed it on the window seal and the midst from the spray instantly maid the lovebugs die. So, I sprayed my entire window, because unfortunately the bugs seem to want to hang around this one window. Now, 2 1/2 hours later I still don't see any love bugs. I even went as far as spraying below the window seal near the flower bed (because that's where they were crawling from) and they are dead. This may kill my plants, but who cares, these bugs are driving me crazy.

I have been trying to roof my sisters house this week and I cant work for the buggs. Easily millions of them. On my eyeballs, stuck in my hair and on my sweat. I am a full time roofer and have to endure hellish extremes on a daily basis, but these things are grossing me out! I just came down off the roof to research these little bastards. Love bugs must die! Any ideas?

Fricking love bugs
Posted 9/29/2007 8:48:38 PM by Michael

Just painted house and within a week I have millions of love bugs swarming just my house I used durimax paint from lowes its brownish gray with a cream trim. I have killed at least 30,000 love bugs today and it doesn't look like I have not been able put a dent in the overall population. Today I bought a bug zapper and hung it directly outside my front door about 5 feet in the air I expect to find billions of dead lovebugs in the morning

OMG! Who pissed these critters off?
Posted 10/30/2007 8:50:19 PM by Porsche

Love bugs have infested my sunporch and the outside of my apartment building for almost 60 days. I've heard that love bugs swarm for 4-5 weeks, but that's garbage, unless there are now 14 days in one week. The bugs are in full swarm around 12 noon-4pm now, when it's sunny outside. As soon as the sun sets and it gets really cold out, the bugs will crawl under the ledges on the roof (no doubt enjoying the heat from everyone's apartment). They are all over my bedroom window, which means if someone down stairs is frying catfish and I need to open a window for ventilation, I'm screwed. The last time I left a window cracked, and that's with a screen outside, the damned bugs still managed to get inside only to irritate the dickens out of me. I hate these things, and what's worse is they supposedly come back year after year in greater numbers (than before) if left untreated. At least if you're living in a home you can spray. I'm on the 3rd floor of my building, so I can't get to the roof, etc. THIS SUX!

Yellow House
Posted 5/4/2008 12:38:02 PM by mygenie

We were never bothered with love bugs until we painted our house yellow a few years ago. Now the love bugs cover our house. We can't use our front door. Somehow they also find ways to get inside. Our neighbors don't have them anywhere as bad as we do except a neighbor down the street, who also has a yellow house. Has anyone found a way to get rid of them that really works?

Light colors
Posted 6/2/2008 1:12:00 PM by Aquaman

Dear yellow house, I have been pressure wahing in the SE for over 20 years. The houses that attract the most lovebugs havs always been quite obvious from my standpoint, the light colored ones.

I currently have a black truck, and have noticed no swarming around it, only splattered ones on the hood, bumper, and windshield. My last truck was white and during the peak of lovebug season I would be at a gas pump and they would crawl all over me and my truck, infuriating.

The white car pictured above is classic love bug behavior with light colors.

....my two cents

They ruined the paint on my Jeep. Small pitted holes where the acid in the bug took off the paint. These bugs are viscious here in Louisiana. I've looked everywhere for a layered coat which could be placed on the front of the vehicle to place a protective coat but can't find one.
