Search Engine Placement & Optimization

Search Engine Optimization is one of the most important marketing tools to increase website traffic. We can tailor a solution specific to your business and the intended target audience.

Placing high in search engines requires a comprehensive strategy. It should be a deciding factor starting with the design of a webpage. Different search engines use different methods, but most rank pages by:

  • Page Title — keyword placement in the <TITLE> tag;
  • Keyword Density — How often do the keywords appear in the body text? A good keyword density is 3-7%; increasing the density can lead to lower rankings
  • Keyword Placement — Keywords appearing near the beginning of the page receive more weight;
  • Image ALT tags — Image <ALT> tags are an important placement for keywords;
  • Header tags: <h1>, <h2>, etc. — many search engine spiders look for keywords within these tags and rate them at a premium;
  • Link Popularity — Is your site linked from other popular pages about the same subject? We can consult you in strategies to on how to get links to your site on popular sites
  • Update Frequency — current, up-to-date content leads to higher placement.
  • Robot Instructions — use the "robots" meta-tag as well as the robots.txt file in your domain root to instruct spiders how to crawl your site.

Factors that influence search engine placement in a negative way:

  • Flash-based pages — Currently, search engine spiders are unable to follow links in Flash animations. If you opt for Flash-based navigation, attention-to-details makes sure that all pages are accessible via static HTML links as well.
  • Excessive javascript — javascript code can make your site more easy to navigate, but it can also inflate the HTML code of your site and dilute keyword placement. Also, search engines can't follow links created in javascript code.
  • Parameters in URL — Some forms of dynamic page content (esp. "cgi" pages with parameters in the URL) will not be indexed by search engines. Google indexes most cgi pages now, but it stays away from pages with an "id" parameter. (This is because it assumes it's a session id.)
  • irrelevant keywords, hidden text, misleading descriptions — All methods to trick search engines are well-known and counteracted by the major search engines, often leading to the site being banned.
  • Fake or irrelevant links from other sites — Google rates sites higher when they get many external links from other sites. Some webmasters try to increase their rankings by signing up with "link farms," webrings, or making 100's of additions to address books. Most of these strategies are identified by google's system, and lead to the sites being banned.

attention-to-details' Search Engine Placement Strategy

To ensure a good search engine placement, and stay near the top of the list, attention-to-details uses the following strategy:

  • We look at the overall structure of your website.
    Websites with too little — or too much — information per page tend to fare more poorly in search engines. The reason: they have either too few keywords in the body text, or the occurrences of keywords is diluted through the mass of text.
  • We add or modify meta-descriptions, titles, keywords, and header tags
    We make sure to pick the words and descriptions that, in combination with the page body text, have the highest chance of achieving a top ranking by the search engines
  • We submit your site manually to the major search engines
    Manual submission is far more effective than automatic submission. Also, the top six search engines will make up over 99% of your site's web search traffic
  • Analysis of your server log files
    Once traffic is increasing, we check your server log files to verify that your top priority keywords are bringing in the majority of web traffic. We identify pages that have room for improvement and discuss with you options to modify content or meta-tags to further improve site traffic.
  • Bi-monthly resubmission and check-up
    Search Engine Maintenance: Every two months, we check your page placements and compare them to your competitors'. We adjust keywords and titles as necessary and take necessary steps to allow your pages to rank higher.
